Hi

You can check at the hotel you are going to stay.

Price now from 30US$ to 35US$ per day for excellent tour guides from 7am to 7pm

You should ask more.

Thanks

are you after a driver - tuk tuk or car?

or a guide? or both?

I%26#39;m more after a driver (car)/ guide. Please let me know

Thanks

:)

Are there any drivers, car or tuk tuk, that are also guides or do you always have to hire one of each - a driver (with his vehicle be it car or tuk tuk) plus a guide?

Thanks.

I%26#39;d rather have just a combo driver/guide all in one.

Thanks.

Licensed Guides are the only people who can accompany you into the temple areas. Drivers are not licensed as guides so you usually hire a guide and he looks after booking a driver(either a car or tuk tuk) for an extra charge. You can hire a driver who will be able to give you a lot of information about the temple you are visiting but he will not be able to tour the temple with you. There have been a number of excellent drivers recommended on this forum who do this.

As to cost - we were there in April of this year and were charged US$175 for 3 days, which included pickup at the airport, sunrise pick up at 5:30am, a trip to Banteay Srei(sp?), sunset visit and the usual tours of temple complexes. We also visited sites other than the temples. We had an A/C car which we felt we needed at our age(mid 60%26#39;s) and the guide provided cold water throughout the day and had umbrellas handy if needed. We felt we got excellent value for our money as our guide provided us with insight to Cambodia that we would not have gained through just visiting the temples. I know that the prices have gone up since we were there so expect to pay more.

If you decide to hire a guide, do a search here for guides as there have been quite a number of recommendations. The better guides have websites or e-mail and tend to get booked up so you should not wait too long before contacting them. Good luck with your plans.

Generally, drivers are not allowed to guide around the temples, and will stay with/near their vehicles once you get to where you are going. There are some who are knowledgable and can fill you in a bit before you go into the temple itself, and about sights on the way, but they wont come with you into the temple itself. The guides are educated through a special course (at great personal expense)to learn about the temples and are a fountain of knowledge, IMO they were worth every cent and brought the place to life with their stories and descriptions. The alternative is to buy a guide book from the mobs of kids who will assail you outside the temples and guide yourself, but its a bit hard to get a specific question answered by a book. Spend the money and get both (driver AND guide)-you might only ever get there once.

Sorry Newfie-you just beat me to it!

If you are interested in, you should have a look at www.angkor-guides.com to see if this is the type of service you are finding. We went to Siem Reap, Angkor in July and we use this service.

An air con car is 20-25$ a day, generally 5-10$ more for a longer day - ie sun rise, and 10$ extra for going to further places like bantay srei/roulos group

tuk tuks can be got for 8-15$ a day, depending on whether you get them from your accomodation, or the street

Tour guides, are officially trained, and cost between 25-50$ depending on the language you need them in

Alot of the guides on here will likely to be booked up by now for next month, although you might strike lucky. And there are shed loads of excellent drivers, and guides, who arent mentioned on here! If you cant book one before, get one there, if you dont like them, dont use them for the next day
