Do the staff expect tips?
what is the general rate of tipping, per diem or otherwise?
tipping in Siem Reap hotels
Depends on where you are staying. In the high end hotels, it%26#39;s more expected than at mid-range hotels or guest houses, where it%26#39;s not expected at all.
I always leave 2-3,000 riel each day (less than a dollar) for the maid and find they REALLY appreciate it. They work hard for $1-2 a day. It%26#39;s a good way to get rid of your extra riel; means not much to you and lunch for them!

I have never tipped at a guesthouse, but I leave small bills for servers at restaurants %26amp; occasionally tip my moto/tuk-tuk driver. It depends entirely on the service.
Asians themselves rarely tip , when you tip please make it small , the reason for that i have found hard to explain in the past .
ODBAL offers great advice. I%26#39;ve seen tourists handing out fives and tens here and there, and people come to expect that. It is not the norm. Same goes for handing out stuff at random to children or local people. It just encourages begging. If you want to be generous, donate the money to a local hospital or school.
