Excellent English-speaking tour guide: Sreang Teng

I wanted to pass along a recommendation for Sreang Teng, an excellent English-speaking tour guide for Siem Reap and the Angkor temples. My wife and I used Sreang%26#39;s services on New Years Day 2009. We were only in Siem Reap for one day (we were traveling from Bangkok to Phnom Penh), but Sreang was able to put together a wonderful itinerary that included tours of the Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom temples.

Sreang is like a walking encyclopedia! He really knows his stuff and is able to give you a deep understanding and appreciation of the temples you are viewing. Even among some heavy crowds, he was able to effortlessly navigate us to portions of the temples that were void of any other tourists or tour groups. He also takes excellent pictures!

Sreang is very flexible with his itinerary; give him the smallest idea of what you are interested in and he will have multiple recommendations for you on the fly. We mentioned in passing that we were interested in authentic Cambodian-made souvenirs, and Sreang quickly arranged a post-lunch tour of a local artisan school specializing in paintings as well as stone and wood carvings. Very cool!

Sreang can pretty much take care of all your needs including arranging a driver and picking you up from the airport or hotel. His contact info is teng_sreang@yahoo.com and he also has a website at http://angkorsiemreaptourguide.com/index.htm. He is very good about checking his emails, and we had no problems booking him that way. Cheers!

  1. Angkor Wat Guide

Teng was our guide for a day tour in Angkor Wat.

For a start, you'll be surprise what kind of crowd you'll run into at 6am in the morning even during the off peak season. We were amazed by his unconventional way of getting us round the crowd to catch the sunrise – through the east gate. And he would continue to do so for the rest of the tour to ensure that we do not clash with the masses.

Teng’s knowledge of the angkor history is probably just as good as the most experienced guides around, but we needed a guide with a decent command of English and he fitted perfectly into our requirements.

As amateur photographers, we were preoccupied with taking photos and it did help as Teng was able to help us identify some national geographic moments.

The heat at Angkor Complex really takes everything out of you. So another plus for riding in Teng’s fully air-conditioned jeep – we earned a lot of envious looks from tourists travelling in tuk tuks. Never underestimate what those cold drinks and lemon grass scented towels can do for you.

Throughout the day, we made plenty of abrupt changes to our itinerary but Teng never fussed and was quick to assent to our requests. After our tour ended, he came from home to our hotel to pick us up for a local khmer bbq dinner, where he would offer unbiased tips and information about travelling in Cambodia.

We are so happy that we made a true Cambodian friend, as opposed to some who would refer him as a professional guide. Thanks Teng, from your friends in Singapore!
