Mekong Express

Hi there,

Can anyone advise me what time does the Mekong Express station open? I am arriving in Phnom Penh at around 830am in the morning and intend to take the tuktuk or taxi down to the station to book bus tix to Siem Reap for the next day 730am and wonder what time it opens lest i reach there and doors are closed.

We arrived about the same time and the bus stations were open. The taxi in to town was $10US, and we just asked to go to the bus station. It is really a bunch of bus company offices, which are located close to each other.

Make sure you pin down the bus departure time before you buy the ticket. Don%26#39;t go by the posted times. I bought our tickets (don%26#39;t remember the company name) and then walked around the corner (to the street along the river) and saw another bus ready to go. We had to wait about 3 hours for our bus.

I%26#39;m not sure there is a real difference in service between them...I%26#39;d look for the one that departed the soonest.

We were going directly to SR, rather than buying in advance as you plan.

Mekong Express

thanks for your reply...i thought if i wanted to only travel by the Mekong Express bus and that i chose to go to their station, i would only see their bus? I%26#39;m slightly confused by what you mentioned..

It%26#39;s not a bus station per se, but their actual ticket office which is right along the riveside. The buses depart and arrive on the side streets perpendicular, causing lovely traffic problems at rush hour. There is also the Angkor Express and another company- I used all 3 bus companies my last trip and they were pretty much the same only you end up paying at least several dollars more for the Mekong Express. I chose the Angkor Express after trying the Mekong and was very satisfied.

Oh, I went to and from the airport half a dozen times in Cambodia the past few weeks and I never paid more than $5 for a tuk tuk. They are very negotiable. Motos are even cheaper, given you don%26#39;t have a suitcase.

yup i mean the actual ticket office which is where we are planning to ask the tuk tuk to go to. Just wanted to confirm it would have been opened by 9am as we will probably be heading there first to get our tickets to Siem Reap.

So when you say perpendicular wise- the buses would be there, this means during the next morning, i will have to be there to take the bus right? Just wanted to confirm this so that i will choose a hotel/motel that is nearby the bus station for the first day in order to easily walk to the buses and wait for them first thing in the morning the next day. :)

Perpendicular meaning right around the corner, yes. There are dozens of guesthouses/hotels along the riverside, you will be able to find a place easily within walking distance (5-10 min. max) to the bus office. They open at the crack of dawn as they have to get people on the buses departing at 7:00am.
