Should I book Flight From BKK to SR right now?

Hi everyone,

Hoping to get somethings settled before we go to Thailand Jan 12. Have been advised that Angkor Wat is not to be missed, so we will go as soon as we get there before heading to the islands. Do people suggest booking online for Bangkok Air flight or do we do this from the airport? Or use a travel agent? Are these flights from the international aiport or from the smaller airport? what about booking guesthouses now, from home?

Lots of questions....thanks!

Should I book Flight From BKK to SR right now?

We like to have things organized before we leave home - some people don%26#39;t! We had no problems with booking our Bangkok - Siem Reap flights with Bangkok Air over the net -it will be expensive but I don%26#39;t think you will save any by waiting until you get to Bangkok (someone else may have better info on that). You will fly from the international airport in Bangkok. Again, booking accommodation is usually what you are most comfortable with - we had no problem booking from home and it was nice knowing we had our accommodation set. Some places will pick you up at the airport if you have booked with them - another nice feature!

You have been advised well - Angkor Wat is definitely worth the time and money to visit - it was the highlight of our 5 week Asia tour!

I agree with Newfie43, it is better to have your plans fully arranged before traveling. I booked my flight from BKK (Bangkok) to REP (Siem Reap) via the internet. Bangkok Airways unfortunately has a monopoly on this route so expect high airfare.

If you need a visa, Cambodia%26#39;s e-visa service on-line was fabulous. It was quick and easy and we had no problems at Cambodia%26#39;s immigration counter in Siem Reap.

Angkor Wat is a wonderful destination, simply amazing and definitely worth the trip. Also I would recommend a day trip to Ayutthaya while you are in Bangkok. Ayutthaya is the former capital of the Thai Kingdom and the ruins there are awesome.

Make sure you bring plenty of deet based mosquito repellent and strong sun screen.

Have a wonderful time in Thailand and Cambodia!

AirAsia fly from Bangkok to Phnom Penh - a lot cheaper than Bangkok Air to Siam Reap.

Phnom Penh is well worth a visit in it%26#39;s own right and Siam Reap very accessable by car, bus or boat from Phnom Penh.

I agree with the above. Having researched Cambodia on this wonderful website for our trip end of Jan 2009, I will be flying from Bangkok to Phnom Penh with Air Asia at a considerably cheaper cost than to fly from Bangkok to Siem Reap. We will explore Phnom Penh for two days and then catch a bus to Siem Reap at a cost of about $10 (5 hour trip). Bangkok Air seem to have a monopoly and the fares are very expensive to Siem Reap.

What are peoples views on money in Cambodia. I know I need $US, but the exchange rate between UK pound and $ has plummeted and I am wondering if it might be best to take UK Pound to change into $ in Cambodia itself??

Hi CriminologyUK,

In November 2007 and March this year the US$ is King - ie it is the preferred currency for virtually all transactions. You even get change in US$, Riel only being used to top up the change if its less than US$1.

All prices are listed in US$ at even budget restaurants and cafes and hotels quoted in US$. Riel is accepted obviously but its not really the preferred currency. You might be best off changing some money into US$ and keeping some UK Pounds to change into Riel.

I would convert your money at home, or get it out of the atm%26#39;s - esp if you have a nationwide debit card or post office card - no international charges - so you get the best exchange rate.

Everything is in dollars, change less than 1$ will be given in rhiel - the currency is somewhat interchangable. Def no point in coverting to local currency, pretty much everyone would prefer $ to rhiel!

Book it online. You%26#39;re traveling in high season; why take chances?

Or use a travel agent?

No need-you can book online yourself.

Are these flights from the international aiport or from the smaller airport?

From the international airport in Bangkok.

What about booking guesthouses now, from home?

Again, I would say do it from home, just so you can get the one you want. Some might be disappointingly full. See a good selection on www.canbypublication.com

Enjoy your trip!

I have always booked Bangkok Air on line with no problems, same with Air Asia. Angkor Wat is worth a week...impossible to describe. We took Air Asia from Bangkok to PP and the bus to SR. Really enjoyable trip to be able to see the countyside. We booked a place in SR on line (the Green Garden Guest House) and it was great. We%26#39;ll go back again in a couple of years and definitely stay there again.
