looking for a hotel in PP, criteria price ($3-30), SAFETY, &

location.

Safety is the key for me - would like an in room safe where I can leave passport, credit cards, travellers checks, etc as well as reasonably safe to leave camera and a couple of laptops either in the room or with the management.

Price - while I prefer 3 to 30 dollars for a single in late December, willing to pay more if need be.

Location - can I walk outside safely, even maybe in the evening? internet either in the hotel or nearby. not too far from major museum/place etc. Close to nightlife would be another plus.

Again safety is the key for me, so would appreciate any suggestions, even if it doesn%26#39;t meet the other criteria.

I am not sure if my fear of Phnom Penh is fair, but I have been warned a couple of times.

Thanks

FCC Phnom Penh fits your criteria, but dbl the charges around $60 a nite. Small in room safe, but won%26#39;t fit your laptop unless its one of the mini(s)...8in ones.

Hello again Andrew

You might like to have a look at Nordic House Hotel. I am staying there in March. It is apparently on a side street from Sisowath Quay - Street 136. (I have seen it on a map somewhere) and it seems to be just a few meters back from the Quay. (I think it is behind the Paragon) . My single room with TV, WIFI. ensuite, aircon, is $20 per night. It doesn%26#39;t mention anything about a safe.

If you stay there, or check it out, will you let me know what it is like?

Thanks

Marlene

Basic safety in Phnom Penh is fine although there are always the wild second hand tales of woe , my wife and i walk most places , even (not dark) side streets with not a sign of bother . The flamingos hotel at $25 per night is clean and friendly , easy walk to the riverside etc , have in-room digital safe , restaraunt/bar downstairs .

An alterative would be either of the Indochin hotels , #1 on the riverside and #2 a short way up a side street .Prices start from $10.00 per night , both clean and respectable .One more is %26#39;Sunny%26#39;a realy nice room at $35.00 with a balcony overlooking the riverside , located over an internet cafe , easy walk to Kings palace and Royal museum etc , e-mail

lek_sovanrith@yahoo.com This room has a lock up door at the entrance door as well as in your room .

Come and enjoy the happy , helpfull people .

Thanks for the responses, will try one of the less expensive places with a room safe. I am ok if my camera and laptops etc disappear, I just do not want to come back and find passport, cards, and a fair bit of cash all gone - so I trust that the places with room safes all have ok reputations - no history of misterious diappearances. Will report where I stay in PP and Siem Reap and how it works out.

Any more room safe hotels or info on the reputations (just for safety, not for other features) greatlt appreciated.

thanks

I don%26#39;t want to be mean, but why are you traveling with all those electronic gadgets anyhow? If it is for business, stay ina more reputable place (it will be an expense write-off, no?) where you could trust the staff with things locked up. (There are extra keys) Safety boxes are not always safe. Never, ever leave valuables in your room, inlcuding your passport and money. The city is safe to walk around in at night, just avoid dark back alleys. Wishing you safe travels.

I need the gadgets for my work, but that is not what concerns me.

It is losing cash, credit cards, passport, travellers checks etc and needing to stop someone hopefully not mean with this kind of story which they have unfortunately heard before,

It is the problem of travelling alone around the world, if it is not safe to carry docs and cash with you - and while I hear some here say that Phnom Penh is not unsafe , and it is unsafe to leave it in the room, even in the safe (that is why I go to tripadvisor - to not end up at a place where the staff or owners make a habit of ripping off guests - then my best course seems to be some with me, some in the room, and a room based on trip advisor recommendations, their reputation , the feel of the place , etc. For example , the place that I stay at in siem Reap - I have met and been impressed by the owners, they give 10 per cent of their profits to needy people, etc. (It does not have a room safe unfortunately).

Will report where I stay in Phnom Penh, and my experience, assuming I live to tell the tale. Any additonal recommendations of places to stay appreciated. (I am a night person, I like to go out at night, meet local people, expect I will like Phnom penh as long as can feel safe).

thanks

Winkingfrog , to answer your question even though i do not doubt your integrity , many people feel (and quite rightly so)that %26#39;Self praise%26#39; is no recomendation

Well passport, or travelers cheques are pretty much what I leave in a room safe. If you book a halfway descent place I don%26#39;t think you have to worry. I couldn%26#39;t fit my 12in notebook in the safe, but I locked it up in my backpack - better than nothing and it ended up alright.
