Cycling back roads - safety?

Hi there - I will be joining a group in late February in Siem Reap, and we will be cycling the back roads all the way to Phnom Pehn (sp?) for the Somaly Mam Foudation. i have never been to this region, and just read the US government tourist advisories online. Yikes. They have got me pretty jumpy at this point. Landmines around bridges, crime - sometimes lethal - in cities and in rural areas, women being sexually assaulted...I am a woman...

Reading this forum of seasoned travelers has subdued my fears somewhat. I ask you all, should I be scared to undertake something like this, or am I nuts? I would love to go!!! But not if I won%26#39;t come back...!!! please be compassionate, I ask with the utmost humility. Thanks in advance.

Hi! If you want to bike for your trip. It is very safe on the ways - city or rural areas! Cambodia is a very safe country now. Thanks.

I%26#39;ll be doing a solo cycling trip and have done a lot of research on the topic. You should be quite safe cycling, especially with a group. There are several cycling-specific tour operators with tours that include a Phnom Penh-Siem Riep segment, so even if you%26#39;re traveling the backroads, your route may be well-traveled by cycling tours. Being a solo female traveler on this trip, I decided to base myself in Siem Reap and do day rides from there instead of doing a point-to-point trip.

By the way, U.S. travel advisories on most developing nations are rather scary. I prefer to consult the advisories from the U.K. or Australia as they seem to be much more sensible. Our family (with two kids) has traveled to many places for which the U.S. has issued dire warnings; by applying common sense and being aware of our surroundings, we have never felt unsafe.
