We are planning to do a trip throughout Southeast Asia 20 December till ~14 January. Due to recent events at the Bangkok airport our travel agent strongly advised us to avoid Thailand. Very unfortunate!! We are trying to wait as long as possible as we would rather inlcude Thailand but not going to take any risks either.
Originaly we were planning to end the last week on on or two Thai islands (after visiting Bangkok and Chiang Mai) before flying back home. We were thinking Koh Samui or Koh Phangan in quiet boutique style hotel with own private pool.
In the meantime, and to have a plan B, can anyone advise comparable island /beach locations in Cambodia. Normally I would have done research myself but unfortunately not enough time and we need to decide soonest what we want to do.
FYI, I will be posting same on Vietnam forum as part of our trip.
Thanks.
alternative for Thai island
No exclusive beach destinations for Cambodia? Anyone?
alternative for Thai island
You could google sihanook-ville that has many islands off shore or a specific is Bamboo island .
There really isn%26#39;t going to be anything that you are looking for in Cambodia. Sihanoukville really does not compare to the Thai islands you mention, you%26#39;ll find neither peace nor tranquility...and the offshore islands in Cambodia are fairly primitive, pools would be unheard of.
Thanks for that. That would seem to be the conclusion (same for Vietnam) so will go elsewhere. Looking so much forward to visit though as this will be our first time there! Less than 2 weeks before leaving...can%26#39;t wait! Don%26#39;t even care that it%26#39;s cold and raining here :-))
you probably need to head to Malaysia to find what you are looking for, the Cambodian islands have very limited development right now, however, Koh Puos or Snake Island will be the first to offer 5 star luxury in the future
I think Sokha beach resort in Sihanoukville might be one of ur option.

If you are looking for Boutique hotels: There are only 2 offering great services. One is the sokha beach resort, a 4 star resort opened recently and another one is the Independence hotel resort 3 star just open this year.
I only have been to Sokha Beach Resort it is very high class and quiet. The beach is one of the best in Sihanouveville.
Here is website of the Independence hotel:

Hope these are of help.
Hi Marybel,
Though not Cambodia, Phu Quoc, a island 4kms from Cambodia that is part of Vietnam, is maybe what you%26#39;re looking for. Check out the Phu Quoc forum, under Vietnam forums. tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g469418-i10303-Phu…

Can you travel directly from Cambodia to Phu Quoc yet?
Have done some research. Some sites say will happen one day but not at the moment. Also if you can do it it seems that a visa for Vietnam is not required if you do not go via mainland Vietnam.
Any comments on whether it can be done?
Why don%26#39;t you just go back to Plan A? Thailand has settled down, there%26#39;s a new prime minister, and it was unlikely anyway that the airport closure would happen again anytime soon.
