Buying malarone in Bangkok?

We%26#39;re coming to Cambodia for 2 weeks and are probably going to take malarone to cover the time period we%26#39;re in SR.

I have read on some other forums that you can buy malarone in Boots in Bangkok, at a much cheaper rate than the UK. Does anyone know if this is the case? We%26#39;re there for a day before we fly to PP. I gather there are quite a few Boots in BKK airport too.

Thanks.

There are lots of counterfeit drugs in SEA. Be careful about that. I suppose buying at Boots %26lt;should%26gt; be safe.

And be sure to start them 2 days prior to arriving in a malaria prone area.

Buying malarone in Bangkok?

As far as I%26#39;m aware you shouldn%26#39;t be able to by Malarone in thailand, and quite a number of places in the world, its only available in certain countries to help minimise resistance etc.

If you can buy it in thailand its likely to be a fake.

doxy is available from boots in bkk

If you want to buy malarone, have a look at www.travelpharm.com and www.boots.com - both offer an online service with private prescription - only way in uk. Their prices are far lower than other walk in pharmacies

Malarone is not available for purchase in SEA except for Singapore, where a few people have reported that they have had luck getting it at a pharmacy by showing ticket and passport. In Thailand, Malarone is not available over the counter at all, or with a prescription unless you are actually being treated for malaria.

You can, however, purchase Doxycycline at Boots and other reputable pharmacies. Note that it requires careful dosing at the same time each day and that you need to continue it for 28 days after you leave the malaria risk area.

Discuss with your doctor which medication is right for your situation.

Thanks everyone, sounds like general consensus is that it%26#39;s not available to buy in Thailand and if it were, it might be fake. I%26#39;ll not take the risk and get it here before we go! Yes, aware we need to take it 2 days before the infected area. We are only in SR for 7 days, so will start it while in PP. I gather that it is only outwith SR centre that is infected? So in theory, possibly only the 3 days we are doing the temples that is the high risk period. I do appreciate we need to protect ourselves at all times due to dengue fever though. Will be well sprayed in Deet and covered up.

Malarone used to be available in the better pharmacies in Phnom Penh -- and it may still be available (I haven%26#39;t looked in the last few years, so I%26#39;m not sure). The best bets in Phnom Penh would probably be Pharmacie de la Gare, U-Care and the pharmacy a couple doors down from Lucky Supermarket on Sihanouk Blvd ( can%26#39;t remember the name, but there%26#39;s only one - it%26#39;s right behind the grilled chicken stalls).

Malarone, the real Malarone, is not available in Cambodia. Another different drug altogether, Malarine, is available but is not for prophylaxis but for treatment only. Malarine is a combination of Melfloquine (Lariam) and atensunate, and a 3 day course is the standard for treatment. It is readily available, and is the most popular treatment for malaria in Cambodia.
