Malarone in Cambodia

Wife %26amp; I are off to Cambodia in January for the first time and my best mate is living in Sihanoukville (Would appreciate any reviews on that seaside town). Were there for over two weeks, and really looking forward to it, it looks great and it will be a challenge. We%26#39;ve had our jabs, and the travel clinic says we need Malarial tablets, and they gave us a choice of four, but Malarone was highly recommended, I know it was the most expensive out of the four but for 60 odd tablets it looks like were going have to find about £2-£3 per tablet, so with the £10 each private prescription were talking a few pounds here. Can you get Malarone in Cambodia? and if so how much? I%26#39;m sure were have to do it here now as we%26#39;ve already payed the prescription but we know friends going there later next year and also Iam curious. Other than PP I hear most of Cambodia is a risk so I suppose it will be worth it. Is Ankgor Wat really worth the trip from Sihan%26#39;lle?

Malarone in Cambodia

You can not get Malarone in Cambodia, or elsewhere in Southeast Asia with the exception of Singapore. The price in Singapore is the same as anywhere else.

Be aware that Malarine, different drug altogether, is sold in Cambodia. It is a treatment for malaria, not a prophylaxis.

Angkor Wat and the many other temples in the area were so much worth our week there that we are going back for longer. But everyone is different, and if you are asking if it is worth seeing then perhaps your interest just is not there. Do some reading about the temples, view some photos, see if they interest you and decide.

Malarone in Cambodia

Malarone certainly used to be available here in PP. I haven%26#39;t looked for a few years, though, so I%26#39;m not sure about the current status.

We are going in 2 weeks time and I was told that malarone wasn%26#39;t available to buy in Cambodia or Thailand, which is where we go first.

Check out prices online, best I can see is £2.20 with Travelpharm.com.

Our private prescription is costing us £23 each so you are lucky!

Do not buy any drugs in Cambodia. They are mostly counterfeit.

I disagree. There are a lot of dodgy pharmacies, and the quality and authenticity of drugs sold there are certainly highly suspect. But there are also a few good pharmacies where I have had no qualms about buying medications for the nearly seven years that I have lived in Phnom Penh. YMMV, of course.

I agree with MAL67.

It%26#39;s the same as in Bangkok, if you go to a reputable pharmacy, you will get legitimate drugs.

Malarone is not sold over the counter anywhere in Asia. You will need an appointment with a doctor and a prescription to get it. That said, you will probably not be needing it anyhow. Stock up on mozzie repellent and wear long sleeves/long pants in early morning hours, evenings. Getting your jabs beforehand was wise, not many people think of that...

Angkor Wat is amazing. Do not miss it, and spend 3 or 4 days there if you can...

%26lt;There are a lot of dodgy pharmacies%26gt;

That%26#39;s my point.

Unless the OP knows where to go specifically, chances are very good he will get counterfeit drugs.

I too have bought drugs in Siem Reap, but you definitely need to know where to go.

Why take the chance? Bring them from home.
