Hi I have recntly been diagnosed with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) any advice about not suffering in south east asia so that my trip is not ruined??
Many thanks
any advice for an upset stomach sufferer??
I don%26#39;t know much about IBS, but what kind of advice did your doctor give you regarding foods you can and can%26#39;t eat?
Do you have a list of foods that are OK and those that are not?
I found I could get plenty of fresh food - fruit, veg etc as well as fresh fruit juice %26amp; bottled water (never ever drink the tap water - clean your teeth in bottled water)
I realise it may not be a simple as saying %26#39;just don%26#39;t eat X, Y or Z%26#39; but if TA%26#39;s can get an idea of the kinds of foods that you are OK with, then perhaps we can offer more advice.
Suffice to say that at the temples, the public toilets are clean but not exactly plentiful (or close together)

I also suffer from IBS and have traveled extensively. I take two Pepto Bismal tablets each morning starting three days before a trip and carry a large supply of Imodium and usually take two or three each night and sometimes two or more in the morning depending how I%26#39;m feeling. That usually works, well anyway it should!
I stay away from dairy, root vegetables, red meat and anything spicy. Good luck. My gastro Dr. recommended Imodium.
That%26#39;s quite a tough one as every IBS sufferers trigger foods are different!
Some people are set off with fresh fruit and veg, and others aren%26#39;t.
Do you know what your particular triggers are? Has your dr given you any medication to use back in the uk? Are you going to take anti malarials?
Sorry for the barrage of questions! If you know what the triggers are, it will help. And some anti malarials such as doxy have a number of ';uses'; as they%26#39;re an antibiotic - so some find they help with stomach symptoms - altho some find they can make them constipated
As for food types, there is alot of fresh fruit, veg, and meat. Stir fried type of meals. you may find the curry based meals aren%26#39;t so good for your ibs - but as i said that really depends on you. If that%26#39;s the case, avoid the obvious currys and things like fish amok
hi guys, many thanks for your prompt responses!! Its usually spicy, rich foods (although i do enjoy them). My symptoms are really quite mild in this country just generally suffer with a dodge stomach now and then which can make me feel nauseas. I do take immodium now and again but rarely. I%26#39;ve got malarone tablets, do they have antibiotics in them?
no, they dont. But i%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll be fine, just make sure you take the immodium with you.
out of 3 of us who took malarone, 1 was more prone to an upset stomach, one was fine and the other was a little more ';challenged'; !
so really is pot luck! But, mainly we thought it was down to the increase in spicey foods, or those with chilli%26#39;s in!
things like amok might not be overly spicey, but are made with a curry paste - lots of chillis, and coconut milk - so may, or may not affect your stomach
There are numerous medications out there for ibs, so if you%26#39;re worried, see your gp and ask if there%26#39;s anything else he may advise taking - some people also take supplements - tablet forms of those probiotic drinks, to try and help - not totally convinced myself though!
Cambodian food is not basically spicey , in fact , much of it is bland , stay away from street vendor food , ALL of it , eat only the foods you eat at home in a restaraunt that has A CLEAN TOILET , visit the toilet FIRST , dirty toilet , poor hygene equals stomach problems .Water is a big problem , drink and clean your teeth with only bottled water , sanitation is not well regarded in Seam Reap and most of the water is pumped from underground .The over use of Imodium can be detrimental to your heath , ask your doctor , the local version takes a little longer to take effect but is easier on your system , less expesive also .
For normally healthy people , you can ignore most of the foregoing , your constitution will overcome .
