early morning Wat visits

Hi all...

We will be spending 4 nights in Siem Reap at the end of April. We are travelling with a 3 year old. To avoid the heat (and his crankiness) we are planning on starting our days of %26#39;temple touring%26#39; at around 5.30 or 6am and ending them at around 11am. Will this give us enough time to see much? What should we prioritize? Thanks!

early morning Wat visits

Hi Tracey... We just returned from four nights in Siem Reap with our two boys aged 8 and 9. You will have more than enough time to see heaps with your schedule. We did two days starting and finishing early, and we found that was ample time to see enough of the temples - and the boys were well and truly over them. We had one day in between with no temples, and just lazing around the pool and going into town.

The temples open at 5am, I think. Angkor Wat was very crowded even at that hour for the sunrise...which was not all that spectacular on any of the days we were there with much cloud cover! It gets light around 6 at the moment, which would be an early enough time to visit most of the temples, which are fairly close together. The best temple we saw was Preah Khan (I think that is the best spelling). We were disappointed at some temples when we arrived with busloads of other tourists- destroys the ambience. But other ones were good.

With a kid I would recommend a car and driver (around $30 per day) as it has air con and you get around quicker than a tuk-tuk.

I think you find you will have plenty of time. Two days of temples was enough for us, and the kids - and the plan to do stuff early in the day is good. We found that most people at our hotel tended to get up early and go to bed early in Siem Reap.

Feel free to shoot me any other questions.

Cheers

Geoff
